Trevor Patrick Breffney Ternan was born at Bath, on the 1st of April, 1860, the fifth son of the late General A. H. Ternan and his wife, Julia.
He was educated at Bromsgrove School and Sandhurst, and was gazetted to the 63rd Foot on the 13th of August 1879, serving in the Afghan War, 1879-80 (Medal), and in the Egyptian War, 1882 (Medal and Khedive's Star).
He joined the Egyptian Army in 1884, and was with the 9th Sudanese in the Nile Expedition in 1884 (Clasp). He was present at the action of Ginniss in 1885.

The Battle of Ginniss (also known as the Battle of Gennis) was a minor battle of the Mahdist War that was fought on the 30th of December 1885, between soldiers of the Anglo-Egyptian Army and Mahdist Sudanese warriors of the Dervish State. The battle was caused by the Mahdist blockade of the Ginnis-Kosha Fort, which British commanders hoped to relieve.

He was present at the Battle of Toski as Brigade–Major of Infantry where his horse was shot. He received a clasp, was mentioned In Despatches, and created a companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 8 Nov. 1889]: " In recognition of services during the action at Toski. Trevor Patrick Ternan, Captain, Manchester Regtiment."

The Battle of Toski (Tushkah) was part of the Mahdist War. It took place on August 3rd, 1889 in southern Egypt between the Anglo-Egyptian forces and the Mahdist forces of the Sudan.
The Insignia were presented by the G.O.C. in Egypt, on the 29th of August 1890. He was A.A.G. (Acting Adjutant General), War Office, Cairo, from 1890 to 1891 and commanded the 1st Battalion Egyptian Army, 1892-93, later joined the Uganda Rifles, 1894.
He served in the Expedition in Unyoro, 1895 (Despatches and Medal), was Commandant, Uganda Rifles, 1896, served in various expeditions in 1896-97, and acted as Commissioner and Consul-General, Uganda Protectorate, in 1897.
King Mwanga
He commanded the operations against King Mwanga, 1897, including the action of Kabawoko and defeat of Mwanga where he was slightly wounded and promoted to Major in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and Brevet Lieutenant–Colonel.
He commanded troops in Uganda against mutineers and rebels in October 1898, to the end of the operations in 1899 (Medal and clasp). He was given the Brevet of Colonel, acted as Commissioner and Consul-General in British East Africa, 1900.
He commanded punitive expeditions against the Ogadan Somalis, 1900-1, medal and clasp, and created a Class 1 General, served in the South African Boer war, 1901-2, medal and four clasps, as A.A.G. (Acting Adjutant General), Southern District, 1903, commanded a column in the Orange River Colony, was A.A.G., South Africa, 1903-5 and became Colonel on the 20th of May 1903, Brigadier–General, Commanding Standerton District, Transvaal, 1906-7.
He retired, Staff, on the 9th of November 1907.
Trevor married Dorothy Alsop on the 28th of June 1906, at St. Mary the Virgin, Johannesburg, South Africa, daughter of the late G. Alsop, of Teignmouth, Devon, and they had one son and two daughters.
He rejoined the army at the outbreak of WW1 on the 4th of August 1914, as A.A.G. (Acting Adjutant General), and Quartermaster-General, Northumbrian Division (T.F.), Brigadier-General, 102nd Tynesicle Scottish Brigade (20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd Northumberland Fusilier), 2nd of December 1914.
He was created a Companion of the Order of the Bath, C.B. in 1917.
