Herbert Combe was born on the 30th of March 1878, the seventh son of Charles Combe, Justice of the peace, D.L., of Cobham Park, Surrey, and Marianne Harriett Catharine (who died in 1900), only daughter of Captain Inglis, R.N.

The Queen's South Africa Medal (QSA) was awarded to Herbert Combe and Military Personnel who served in the Boer War in South Africa between 11th of October 1899 and the 31st of May 1902He served in the South African War,
The King's South Africa Medal was the second campaign medal for the South African or ‘Boer War’, awarded to Herbert Combe and all those who were in theatre on, or after the 1st January 1902, and had completed 18 months service in the conflict prior to 1st June 1902. Service did not have to be continuous, the recipient would have had to serve from December 1900 to have 18 months service before the war ended in May 1902
He served in the South African War, taking part in operations in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony from January until April 1902
He became a Captain on the 11th of May 1907.
Captain Combe was Adjutant, Territorial Force, and Bedfordshire Yeomanry, from the 13th of March. 19l0, until the 12th of March 1913.
He became a Major in December 1913.
He served in WW1 from 1914 and was wounded in October 1914.
He was mentioned in Despatches and created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order.
Herbert became Acting Lieutenant-Colonel on the 3rd of June 1916, commanding Leicestershire Yeomanry, and commanding the 15th Hussars on the 5th of April, 1918.
He was awarded a Bar to the D.S.O. for services in connection with operations in the field.
Exeter and Plymouth Gazette 13th August 1908On the 12th of August 1908, at Teignmouth, Devon, he married Amy Kathleen Rudkin, daughter of G. M. Rudkin, of Teignmouth, Devon and they have one son, Patrick Heddon Harvey.
