This project uses photographs, objects, newspaper cuttings, first-hand accounts and information gleaned from local and national records to tell the stories of the individuals and families from Teignmouth and Shaldon that were affected by the First World War.
A Great War project by Teign Heritage Centre
Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. we have been able to undertake research and collect information about the affects of The Great War on the local community as a whole during the period from 1914-1918.
Much of this information has been presented in a series of exhibitions marking the centennary of key events, and is provided here as a memorial to the period, available to individuals, families, schools and community groups so that they can search for free in order to find out more about the effects of the War in relation to the lives of real local people and our town.
From the initial release of this website in 2019, it is intended that it will continue to be updated as further research provides more information and detail on the people and events involved.
Teign Heritage is a volunteer run community organisation with one part-time paid member of staff.
Our volunteers are central to this and many other projects, undertaking research, planning and delivery of displays and exhibitions and this site and we also welcome contributions from members of the public where they may have further details or photographs of the events, people and places mentioned herein.
As a result of this project, we hope that residents and visitors to the town will take the opportunity to learn more about the local heritage and gain a better understanding of how The Great War had a local impact.
