Warrick (also known as Arthur) was born in Teignmouth in 1881.

The 1891 census showed him living with parents and siblings at 6 Chelsea Place, Teignmouth.

Warrick's father was George H Goodman (Born in Saltash, Cornwall in 1832) and his mother was Henrietta E Goodman (Born in 1839 in Saltash, Cornwall). George worked as a school attendance officer.

Warrick joined the Royal Navy on 2 July 1900, service number Dev/343628, giving a false age and being shown as Warrick Arthur.

In 1904, quarter 4 Warrick married Eva Phillips who was also born in Teignmouth. Their marriage was registered in Newton Abbot.

The 1911 census shows them as living at at 22 Kent Road, Devonport where Warrick's occupation is listed as an armourer in the Royal Navy. Whilst living there they had a son Brian, in 1907.

Warrick served on various ships and was on board HMS Charybdis, a Dido-class cruiser, when war was declared.

 Remaining on this ship Warrick was transferred ashore to the naval base HMS Vivid in Devonport on 14 November 2014 then to the Royal Naval Hospital, Stonehouse, Plymouth, where he died from pulmonary turberculosis on 19 November 1914.

He was buried on 24th November in non-conformist section of Teignmouth Cemetery and is remembered on Seafront Memorial, Teignmouth.

Eva became a widow at the age of 34, with an 8 year old child to support, during wartime.

 

HMS Charybdis

Charybdis spent most of her career in British waters, with occasional voyages to the Indian Ocean and Far East commands. She became part of the 12th Cruiser Squadron on the outbreak of war.
