Buried: Reburied in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Belgium.

He is remembered on the Seafront Memorial and St. James' Church Memorial Window, Teignmouth.

Awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal

Age 51. Hugh was the father of Lieutenant Hugh Elliot, who died in Salonika in 1916 whilst serving with his father's regiment, he also had a second son serving with Royal Garrison Artillery.

Hugh, a regular soldier, was born 22 October 1863 in Gorakhpur, Bengal, India, son of Frederick Eden, a magistrate, and Marcia Cordelia Elliot. He attended Charterhouse School from 1877 to 1881. Passing out from Sandhurst Military College in 1883 he served in East India and Burma with 8th Regiment of Foot (The King's Liverpool Regiment).


Hugh married Alicia Lucy Robinson at Fyzabad, India on 25 May 1889. By 1901 the family were living in England where he was Adjutant to his regiment; the family were registered at Toxteth Park, Liverpool.

In 1911 he was living at 5 Grosvenor Terrace, Teignmouth with his wife and four of his children; Margaret Elliot, Gilbert Percy Elliot, Clara Lucy Elliot and Carles Frances Desmond Elliot (His other son Hugh Elliot is not present). The family have a servant living with them. Hugh at this point was now a Major on the retired Army list.

He was serving in France with the 11th Battalion, The King's Liverpool Regiment, and went to the front in May 1915.

Hugh was killed at Ypres on 26 July 1915. Reburied in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Belgium.
