Private Ernest Edgar Gilpin age 48. Born in Teignmouth 1867 and baptised on 1 June, Ernest was the son of Robert and Matilda Gilpin, Jewellers, of Regent Street.
The 1871 and 1881 census showed him with his family at 24 Regent Street. On 1891 and 1901 census he was living and working as a goldsmith/jeweller with his parents at their shop, 26 Regent Street, Teignmouth.

The electoral roll of 1913 showed him living at French Street.
He had been a member of the 1st Rifle Volunteers for 17 years and joined up with 4th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment at the outbreak of war, army service number 21088. He left £261.72s.6d in his will.
Ernest was serving in Exeter; he died in the VAD Temporary Hospital, Exeter on 28 September 1915.
