Born 1899 in the parish of St. David’s, Exeter, and baptised on 28 July 1899, his parents were James (previously of Coldstream Guards) and Emma Quartly. He was known as James.
1901 census showed him with his family at Paul Street, Exeter, his father is a publican. In 1911 census the family was shown living at the Bird in Hand Inn, 14 Lower Brook Street, Teignmouth.
He was serving in the 5th Reserve Battalion, Coldstream Guards stationed in London, army service number 10301. His service number shows that he would have joined in 1913. He died in London on 19 January 1915.
He was buried in Brompton Cemetery, London. Remembered on Seafront Memorial and St. James’ Church Memorial Window, Teignmouth.
