Lance Sergeant Herbert George Pond, age 26.
Herbert was born in 1889 in Marlborough, Wiltshire.
His father Henry Cook Thomas Pond, was born in Bloomsbury, London in 1855, Henry was the manager of Marlborough gas works in 1911.
Herbert's mother Mary, was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire in 1850.
The 1891 census showed the family living at 32, Albert Terrace, Marlborough, Wiltshire. Herbert's siblings were Henry, Lily, Frank, Alfred, Elsie and Victor Pond.
In 1901 he was living with his family in London Road, Marlborough. Herbert's father had married Rhoda Christina Kew from Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire.
By the 1911 census Herbert was boarding in Swindon, Wiltshire and working as an improver gas engineer.
His father, a widower, later moved to 'Martinsell', Pennyacre Road, Teignmouth, Devon.

Herbert served with 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, army service number 10461.
He died of wounds on 12 March 1915. Remembered on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Killed at Neuve Chapelle 12 Mar 1915, aged 24 or 26; no known grave; Menin Gate Memorial, panel 53; Marlborough War Memorial. [Death reported KM 5 Apr 1915] Son of Henry T.C. Pond, of Teignmouth, Devon; in Snodland for four years c.1910-14 as engineer at Lead Wool Company; Secretary to Snodland Cricket and Football Clubs; trained at Swindon Gas Works; lived at Marlborough.”
