Leonard was born 24 August 1888 (date on army record), however his birth is registered in quarter 3, 1889 at Stourbridge. He was the son of Thomas, a bank clerk and Frances, of Wollaston, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.
The 1891 census showed him with his parents and siblings as visitors in Dursley Hall, Kingswinsford, Staffs. In 1901 he was shown with his family in Wollaston, Stourbridge. He was confirmed into the Church of Our Lady and All Saints, Stourbridge on 1 November 1903.
By 1911 he was living as a boarder at Knowle, Warwickshire and working as a market gardener. His parents moved to Crofton, Lower Brimley, Teignmouth after his death.

Leonard had moved to Ontario, Canada, where he attested on 5 August 1915 in Niagara-on-the-Water into the 24th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, service no. 141200.
On 25 February 1916 he spent two days in No. 2 General Hospital, Le Havre, France. He was also shown admitted to 18th General Hospital, Camiers, France, but with no further details (possibly on his way home).
He died of wounds at the 15th Canadian General Hospital, Taplow on 24 May 1916 and was buried on 26 May 1916 in Clivedon War Cemetery, Taplow, Buckinghamshire.
Remembered on Canadian Virtual War Memorial. Grave Inscription reads: “Born At Wollaston, England”.

The 24th Battalion (Victoria Rifles), CEF, was an infantry battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.
The Battalion embarked for Great Britain on 11 May 1915, arriving in France on 16 September 1915.
It fought as part of the 5th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division in France and Flanders until the end of the war.
