Private Alfred Charles West age 27.

Born in 1889 at Shaftsbury, Dorset, the son of Charles, a mason, and Emily West; the family lived at Fremington, North Devon and were shown there at Muddlebridge on 1891 and 1901 census.

Alfred married Augusta Maud Mary Steer in May1907 at Berrynarbour where he was living, Augusta was then living in Teignmouth. In 1911 he was living in Stourbridge with his wife and young daughter; he was working as a colliery labourer. His widow later lived at 2 Devonshire Place, Teignmouth.

The eldest of five brothers who all served during the First World War, Alfred enlisted at Newbury with the Household Cavalry posted to Worcester Yeomanry Regiment, service number 2410.

He served in Egypt from 24 April 1915. Alfred died of wounds in No. 2 General Hospital, Pendleton on 29 March 1916.

Buried in Manchester’s Southern Cemetery on 1 April. Remembered on Seafront Memorial and St James’ Memorial Window, Teignmouth, and Fremington Village Memorial.
