Private Albert (Bertie) Leonard Stentiford age 20.
Born 1896 at Exeter, Bertie was the only son of William, a blacksmith, and Emma Stentiford.
He was living with his parents in Exeter shown on 1901 census.
In 1911 Bertie was a grocer’s assistant living with his parents and sisters at 87 East John Street, Exeter; he then moved to Teignmouth and was working for Messrs. Young and Sons.

In 1914 when war broke out, he joined the 9th (Service) Hussars, service no. 23050, then transferred to 9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) service number G/S 16460.
He went to France on 29 December 1915.
Bertie was killed in action near Ovillers, Picardie, France on 7 July 1916. Remembered on Thiepval Memorial, Somme; Seafront Memorial and St James’ Memorial Window, Teignmouth.
