Rifleman Samuel Edward Sampson age 27. Samuel was born on the 6 August 1889 at Midsomer Norton, Somerset, the youngest son of William Eales Sampson and his wife Sarah Jane.
He was educated at the Grammar school in Burton-on Trent before moving to London where he worked as a civil servant clerk.
He was shown on the 1901 census with his family in Burton-on-Trent where his father was working for the Inland Revenue & Excise.
On the 1911 census he was a boarder living in Parson's Green, Fulham and working as a civil servant. Samuel married Edith Elizabeth Musgrove at the Munster Park Wesleyan Church, Fulham, on June 24 1915.

In May 1916 he enlisted with the 5th (City of London) Battalion (London Rifle Brigade) London Regiment, service number 4704.
He listed his residence as Teignmouth, where his parents were living at ‘Blakeney’, Higher Brimley, although his wife was living in Fulham. He was then posted to France on 29 August 1916.

Samuel was acting as a bomber when he was killed in action at a point north of Combles and east of Les Boeufs officially on 9 October 1916.
A letter was received by his parents, from a chum of Samuel, telling them of his death which he wrote took place on the afternoon of Sunday 8 October. Remembered at Thiepval Memorial, Somme; and Seafront Memorial, Teignmouth.
