Private Albert George German age 20.
Born at Barton Regis, Bristol in 1896, the son of William Henry and Sarah Jane German (née Gibbs).
The 1911 census showed him as a working boy in a fostering home at Cottage Homes*, Downend, Mangotsfield near Bristol, his younger sister was also listed there as an inmate attending school.
He enlisted at Plymouth, but was resident in Teignmouth according to his army record.
Albert was serving with 1st/5th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, service no. 4125 in India.
He died from shock after an operation for adenoids on 19 August 1916 and was buried on 20 August in Dalhousie Military Cemetery, remembered on Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial, India.
*A children's home run by the Poor Law Guardians at Bristol for those who were orphaned or whose parents were unable to care for them. It appears that Albert's mother Sarah died in 1906.

On 9thOctober 1914 the battalion sailed for India, landing at Karachi 11thNovember 1914.
Here it came under orders of 3rd (Lahore) Divisional Area at Multan.
In December 1915 the battalion moved to Lahore.
