Sergeant William (Warrick) George Shapton age 46.

Born and registered as Warrick George Shapton at St. Pancras, London in 1871 the son of John, a whitesmith, and Susannah Underhay Shapton, both from Teignmouth, Devon.

He was baptised on 11 September 1871 at St. Pancras.

 

He was shown on 1911 census living with his wife Lizzie in Lambeth Road, London and working as a music hall attendant.

Warrick George Shapton married Elizabeth Poore in quarter 3, 1914 registered in Lambeth.

He enlisted at Newcastle-upon-Tyne under the name of George Shapton with the Northumberland Fusiliers on 8 January 1892, service number 3286, stating he was born in Teignmouth and was 20 years of age.

He served for 12 years consisting of 7 years service and 5 years on reserve with 4th Battalion and 11th Battalion, service number 14872.

He attested again as Corporal with the regiment on 21 April 1904 for 4 years and was discharged on 20 April 1908. He reached the rank of Sergeant, but was later demoted to private, his service record is attached.

He served in India, Singapore and South Africa and was awarded the South African Campaign 1899 – 1900 medal. His next-of-kin was listed as his sister Lottie Shapton, London, she was his eldest sister.

After the outbreak of war he enlisted in London with 25th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, service number 26424.

He died in Great Britain on 1 October 1916. Buried at Bramshott (St Mary) Churchyard, Aldershot, Hampshire.

Grave inscription reads: “Gone but not forgotten”.

(On all his army records he declared that he had been born in Teignmouth.)
