Captain Edmund Jackson age 49. Born 1869 in Knottingley, Yorkshire, son of Edmund, a mariner, and Ann Jackson. Edmund married Alice Annie French of Teignmouth in 1891. In 1901 he was living with his wife and son in South Shields.
The 1911 census showed him as master on board ship in Brixham. Alice was living with her son in Tynemouth, Northumberland. During the war Alice returned to live in Teignmouth, their address was Sunnyside, Teign Street.
Edmund was the Master on SS Marden sailing to Newcastle and was six miles north of Cape Grisnez when the ship was sunk by gunfire from enemy submarine UB-36 on 16 April 1917. Edmund lost his life with the ship, the rest of the crew survived. Remembered on Tower Hill Memorial.
