Air Mechanic 3rd Class 3 Reginald John Broom, age 35. Born in 1882 and baptised at Ottery St. Mary on 24 June, the son of John Bently, yeoman and Elizabeth Rogers Broom of East Hayes, Ottery St. Mary. In 1891 he was shown on the census living with his mother and siblings at 83 High Street, Honiton. By 1901 he was living with his cousin, a farmer, at Holcombe Barton and was listed as a farm student. Living on his own means he was shown at 2 West End, Honiton with his mother, a widow and his sister.
Joining the Devonshire Yeomanry in September 1914 Reginald was discharged medically unfit in October 1914, being classed category C. However classifications changed later in the war and he was conscripted at the end of 1917. Reginald entered the Royal Flying Corps, service number 115761, on 4 January 1918 and his rank was changed to Clerk Class 3 on 12 January 1918. He was serving at the Reserve Depot, Perham Down when he became ill with pneumonia and died in hospital on 13 February 1918. He was buried on 18 February in St. Michael's Churchyard, Honiton; remembered on Seafront Memorial and St. Michael's Church, Teignmouth, Devon.
