Private George Henry Cousins age 20.

Born in 1898 the son of Thomas & Maria Cousins, West Teignmouth.

The 1901 census showed George living with his parents and siblings at 4 Exeter Street, by 1911 the family was at 7 Bickford Lane, he was working as a gardener with Teignmouth UDC.

According to his army record George was living at Bridgwater when he enlisted in Chard with 1st Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry, service number 30199. The Western Times of 30 May 1917 reported that George was listed as wounded.

 

He was serving with his regiment in France when he was killed in action during the attack on Eterpigny on 30 August 1918.

Buried in Eterpigny British Cemetery, France; remembered on Seafront Memorial, St. James Church Window, Teignmouth, Devon.

Grave Inscription reads: "He Died as He Lived Thinking of Others".

 

"Kia during operation, whilst acting as a runner to his company. He was killed when he was bandaging an injured stretcher bearer. Captain wrote 'was killed instantly and his death was an honourable one'".
