Private Leonard Lewis Watts Brewer age 18. Known as Lewis he was born at Teignmouth on 22 January 1900 and baptised on 21 March at St. James Church, only son of Bessie Lilian Watts Brewer, 2 Willow Cottages. In 1901 he was living with his mother and grandparents at 2 Willow Street. The 1911 census showed him living in the house of his grandfather with his mother, stepfather and uncle at 34 Willow Street.

Lewis was serving with 1/5th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, service number 69984, when he was reported as missing, later confirmed as killed in action at Havrincourt on 30 August 1918. His death was eventually reported in Western Times on 2 November.

Buried in Vraucourt Copse Cemetery, Vaulx-Vraucourt,France.Remembered on Seafront Memorial and St. James' Church Memorial Window, Teignmouth, Devon.

Grave inscription reads: "Suddenly called to his rest, Life's duty nobly done, one of the best."
