Private Charles Joseph Henry Darby age 20.
Born 2 May 1898 at Woodford and baptised on 12 June, the son of John, butcher, and Elizabeth Darby.
In 1901 he was living with his family at Sutton, Ely, and in 1911 he was shown on the register of Ongar Grammar School, Chipping Ongar, as a boarder.
His parents were living at "The Chestnuts", Sutton, at the time of his death.
Charles enlisted at Newton Abbot, stating that he was residing at Teignmouth, with the Devonshire Regiment, service number 30341.
Somerset Light Infantry Cap Badge.
He later transferred to 7th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry, service number 204190; Charles was serving with them when he was killed in action on 27 August 1918. Buried in La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast, France.
Grave Inscription reads: "For Ever With The Lord".
