Private Harry Edworthy age 38.

Born 1880 in West Worlington, South Molton, the son of Charles, a thatcher, and Elizabeth Edworthy. In 1881 and 1891 the family lived at Lower Cottage, West Worlington. 1901 showed him working as a servant on Cobley Farm in the village, but by 1911 he was a boarder at 16 Higher Brook Street, Teignmouth and working as a carter for the UDC.

In May 1912 at the Whit Monday horse show and parade Harry was the winner of 1st prize in three different categories representing the town council with working horses. He married Edith Mary Bartlett on 18 October 1913 at St. Nicholas Church, Ringmore.

Enlisting at Newton Abbot Harry joined the Worcestershire Regiment, service number 20282. He was serving with 10th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment, service number 203335, and was with them fighting at the battle of St. Quentin when he was killed in action on 22 March 1918.

Remembered on Arras Memorial, France; Seafront Memorial and St. James' Memorial Window, Teignmouth, Devon.

 

"Mrs Edith Edworthy of 8 Speranza Grovelearnt husband Pte Harry Edworthy of Worcestershire Regt Kia on 22 March. Originally in Devon's then transferred to Worcs. Was carter for TUDC, he was a bellringer and belonged to the guild at St James. His brother serving in the artillery is also missing."
