Born 1893 and baptised on 17 September in East Teignmouth, the only son of John and Mary Phillips.
Private John (Jack) Henry Phillips age 25. Born 1893 and baptised on 17 September in East Teignmouth, the only son of John, a gardener, and Mary Phillips. In 1901 he was living with his parents and sister at Dun Esk Lodge, Dawlish Road, Teignmouth. The 1911 census showed the family still there with Jack working as a shop assistant. His parents later moved to Christchurch area.
Prior to enlisting Jack worked for W H Smith and Son.

He joined the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards, service number 12798. This regiment was one of several Guards regiments involved in the storming of Sanders Keep which was a German fortification between the Hermies and Havrincourt roads. Jack was one of many men who were killed in action here on 27 September 1918.
Reburied in 1919 at Hermies Hill British Cemetery, France. Remembered on Seafront Memorial and St. Michael's Church Memorial, Teignmouth.
Grave Inscription reads: "Peace Perfect Peace".
