Private Stephen George Matthews age 19. Born 1899 in Shaldon and baptised 25 June 1899 at St Nicholas Church.
His parents were Thomas Stephen Matthews, baker & confectioner, and Susan nee Budd from Trusham.
In both 1901 and 1911 they are found living at 20 Fore Street in Shaldon together with Stephen's uncle, William John Matthews, who is assisting with the business.

Stephen enlisted in Newton Abbot. He was killed in action on 23 August 1918 in France while serving with 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment 5th Division, service number 68419.
His parents later moved to 1 North View, Shaldon.
